WORLD TRADE EXPECTED TO SLOW IN 2019 ACCORING TO WTO

Trade expansion is expected to slow to 3.9 percent in 2018 & 3.7 percent in 2019 (from 4.7 percent in 2017) according to the World Trade Organization. Mostly driven by Eurozone Economic Issues as well as the slowing Chinese Economy and US and foreign tariffs, export orders are down for the beginning portion of the year. Indices for automobile production and sales (96.9), electronic components (93.9) and agricultural raw materials (97.2) are below trend. Although still in growth mode, international air freight (100.0) and container port throughput (101.2) have dipped but remain on trend.

INVASIVE SPECIES DESTROYING ROSEAU CANE

An invasive species from Asia/Europe has impacted Louisiana and Texas destroying important plants that hold bay and river sands from washing out to sea. Louisiana has issued a quarantine to control spread but they are unsure about a long term solution. Experts are also unsure of the source and type but it is an aphid or type of mealy bug-that sucks sap from the plant eventually killing it. Roseau cane is what holds the river banks together and if the banks start to disintegrate, that could mean a lot more work for the Army Corps of Engineers who will require constant dredging to keep channels open as sands from the Gulf of Mexico and mud wash back and forth and impact channels.
