IAMPE TO OFFER NEW VETERANS COURSE PROGRAM

The International Association of Maritime and Port Executives is pleased to announce that it will offer an introductory course program for veterans and merchant mariners in marine terminal operations. The program will be open to any current member of the Armed Forces or Merchant Mariner looking to come into the port and terminal industry and is current serving or recently detached. Enrollment is open to 15 participants. The cost for the program only a $25 registration fee and the tuition will be covered by fifteen $1,500 scholarships provided by the IAMPE. Scholarships will be provided on a first come first serve basis.

“Our Association is working to address two key issues in this offering, first will be showing our veterans and merchant mariners our appreciation for their service. The second is to help these skilled individuals make a transition into an industry that is looking for responsible and innovative people to fill port and terminal roles,” said Capt. Jeffrey Monroe, Director of Education and Standards for the Association. “This is a continuation of the program we first offered last year introducing vets and mariners to our industry.”

The two day program will be held August 17th and 18th at the International Marine Terminal in Portland from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm both days. The program, focused on container, break-bulk, neo-bulk, dry bulk and project cargoes, will cover the transportation, port and terminal industries; equipment; ships, rail and trucking modes; introduction to port and terminal management and organization; terminal operations; yard operations and efficiency; regulatory responsibilities; safety and security. Each participant will receive a certification as a Marine Terminal Operator (MTO), an introductory professional certification provided by the Association. The course leader will be Greg Oltmanns, who has 40 years of experience in terminal operations, stevedoring, cargo handling and terminal management.

Registration is now open until August 14th. Interested parties may register at registration@iampe.org .

“This is will be an excellent kick off for our new terminal operations program which will be offered to the industry beginning this fall for new personnel coming into terminal operations,” continued Capt. Monroe. “Professional training is critical to meet the expanding need for a new generation of port and terminal professionals.”

Current sponsors include the Maine Port Authority, SDG Ports and Marpro Associates International.
