OUR FOUNDER

Capt. Jeffrey Monroe
IAMPE Director of Education: 2014-2025
A group of luminaries in the maritime port industry sidles up to a bar. It's 2009 at the North Atlantic Ports Association meeting. As the bourbon flows, the animated conversation turns to the lack of training and professional development in the port industry. Captain Jeffrey Monroe turns to them, port executives all, and says "What if we developed it ourselves?" Thus, the concept for IAMPE was born.
Captain Jeff's career made him uniquely qualified to tackle the challenge of developing training tools for port executives. He attended Maine Maritime Academy and graduated with his 3rd Mate license. After a short time in the Navy, he sailed on tankers in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Working his way up to Captain, he eventually came ashore to teach future mariners (and port professionals) at SUNY Maritime at Fort Schuyler and Massachusetts Maritime in Buzzards Bay. From there, he took on executive positions at MassPort and the Port of Portland, Maine.
He drew on this vast experience to develop the materials for Maritime Port Manager and Maritime Port Executive programs. In 2014, he co-founded IAMPE to begin delivering these programs to the industry. His vision for IAMPE was simple: provide cost-effective, quality training to professionals in the port industry.
Captain Jeff served as IAMPE's Director of Education and training from 2014 until his passing in 2025. He worked tirelessly, taught passionately, and mentored with wisdom and encouragement right up until his last.
We strive to honor Captain Jeff's legacy and carry forward his vision of teaching, supporting, and encouraging professionals in the port industry. His profound legacy will continue to be felt by those working in and around ports for years to come.
